Description
Some simple theoretical concepts and models are outlined that describe how colonization affects population genetic structure. Particular attention is given to the effects of stochastic processes on different classes of genetic variation. Because of an overall paucity of empirical data on colonization most data originate from studies on ephemeral plants. Following a discussion of evidence for evolutionary changes in breeding systems that can accompany colonization, genetic studies are suggested that could be conducted on colonizing species.
