Although five varieties were all susceptible to infection by Xanthomonas oryzae, they differed in disease severity and loss of grain yield, and could, on the basis of these, be placed in the following descending order of resistance: Saket 4 (CR44-35), Jayanti (IET1039), Sarjoo 50 (FH109), Sona (IET1991) and IR24. On the basis of differences between grain from healthy and diseased plants, with respect to (1) water absorption and volume expansion on cooking and (2) kernel elongation, Saket 4 was least affected and IR24 most.
