Description
Although five varieties were all susceptible to infection by Xanthomonas oryzae, they differed in disease severity and loss of grain yield, and could, on the basis of these, be placed in the following descending order of resistance: Saket 4 (CR44-35), Jayanti (IET1039), Sarjoo 50 (FH109), Sona (IET1991) and IR24. On the basis of differences between grain from healthy and diseased plants, with respect to (1) water absorption and volume expansion on cooking and (2) kernel elongation, Saket 4 was least affected and IR24 most. Grain from diseased plants showed an increase in protein content, that from IR24 and Saket 4 showing the highest and lowest increase, respectively.ADDITIONAL ABSTRACT:Rice cvs. with similar ratings for high susceptibility to Xanthomonas oryzae differed considerably in disease severity and consequent losses in grain yield, which ranged from 14.7 to 81.3%.
