Background
Computer-augmented environments [7] offer a synergistic merging of computers and common physical objects, which can radically change the way we define human-computer interfaces, construct software applications, and design hardware systems to fit this new model of computing. While this model is beginning to take shape, it is largely unspecified. At least two approaches, however, have begun to emerge: the notion of ubiquitous computing and overlay techniques. The ubiquitous-computing moclel advocates embedding many small, highly specialized computers within our everyday environment. Researchers investigating overlay techniques are dealing with issues in merging two or more media types into one integrated and composite medium that offers the strengths of the combined media.
