Description
This book presents a number of conceptualizations about sustainable tourism and discusses their policy implications in terms of employment, income and foreign exchange inflows. Individual chapters deal with the economists' perspective, alternative forms of tourism, the problematic nature of defining sustainable tourism, size constraints in island states, the question of monitoring and control, and the implications of climate change. Each contribution follows one of two lines of argument: the first asserts that the tourist trade is beneficial, if not essential, to many islands and small states although care should be taken not to 'kill the goose that lays the golden egg', while the second states that dependence on tourism is a bad thing because it contaminates the environment and the culture of the host country, and therefore reliance on it for income and employment should be discouraged.
