This article presents an introduction to the study of the hierarchy of values that secondary students establish, and of the different variables that influence their preferences. For the development of the investigation the primary objectives are, on the one hand, to determine what values do adolescents prefer and, on the other hand, to establish in what measure the variables of gender and age influence the selection of specific values. This study was carried out with a sample of secondary students (n=114), of ages between 14 and 18. The results indicate that both variables (gender and age) have a significant effect on the preference of values. The girls show a preference towards ultimate values, in other words, values which tend to be more abstract and personal. The men, for their part, show a clearer disposition towards practical values, values with a more egocentric and material slant. As the age of the adolescents increases, they prefer values linked to human dignity and equality, rather than those centered on the personal ¿ego¿ or that leave others on one side. RESUMEN Este artículo presenta una aproximación al estudio de la jerarquía de valores que establecen los estudiantes de secundaria, y de las variables que influyen en sus preferencias.
