This chapter provides an organizing framework for the vast domain of interpersonal traits. Part of the chapter highlights commonalities and divergences among traits thought to be similar. It begins by examining traits associated with affiliative and dominance goals within interpersonal relationships. Next, it examines personality traits associated with emotional vulnerability, which can lead to interpersonal dysfunction. Third, it examines personality traits associated with self-regulatory goals in social situations and their influence on interpersonal functioning. Fourth, it discusses how traits combine to influence interpersonal behavior. Finally, it discusses how interpersonal traits can be influenced by social context over time.
