In Camming: Money, Power, and Pleasure in the Sex Work Industry Angela Jones uses an intersectional feminist framework to examine the erotic webcam industry, colloquially called “camming,” and adds to studies on the diversification of sex work in globalization. Jones makes a case for a sociological theory of pleasure as a motivation for social behavior and defines pleasure as “infinitely different sets of gratifying social experiences”(p. 25). According to Jones, camming emerged in the 1990s and expanded in conjunction with developments engineered by economic globalization, including expanding access to the Internet and advancements in telecommunication. However, these developments do not fully explain the exponential growth of camming into a billion-dollar industry that employs millions of workers worldwide.
