Description
One key to developing public spaces which are inclusive and welcoming of youth is to understand how young people use public environments, and how the design and conditions of the physical environment encourages or limits their activities. Behavior Mapping, an observational technique, is a useful method for researchers, designers, and public space managers interested in examining how young people interact in and with public environments. Behavior Mapping is one of the few research tools available which can simultaneously capture observed behaviors as well information about the environmental location and context where the behavior takes place. It is particularly valuable for observing the activities of children and youth, and can be customized to suit a diverse range of settings and research questions.
