Description
This study explores how athletics meets the challenges associated with creating a community out of difference and how its processes can serve as a model for higher education. Based on interviews with athletes, coaches, and athletic administrators from five NCAA division I institutions, this study reports traits that facilitate community-building: team members share a common goal; they engage in intense, frequent interaction; they share adversity; they have a common enemy; and they recognize that each individual has something important to contribute.
