Many cities are focused on becoming "smarter". They are exploring the power of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to become more efficient, effective, transparent, accountable and sustainable. However, there has not been a systematic effort to understand such city-level initiatives and the role they play in making cities smarter. A new global research partnership, Smart Cities and Smart Governments: A Research Practice Consortium, has been formed around an international network of researchers interested in theoretical and practical issues related to smart cities and smart governments. This workshop will offer an opportunity to learn about smart cities and smart government initiatives world-wide as well as to explore emerging concepts and frameworks being used by Consortium members.
