Purpose
In this work, using a commercial finite element software for structural analysis, an investigation about the stability of a non-shallow conoidal shell made of homogeneous, isotropic, and linear elastic material subjected to a uniform transversal load is performed.
Methods
Initially, an analysis is carried out on the critical load and the natural frequency of these shells with their respective buckling and vibration modes. Then, the nonlinear static equilibrium path is obtained, and its stability is determined by investigating the time response of the non-shallow conoidal shell when a dynamic harmonic disturbance is added to the transversal load.
Results
It is observed that by varying the amplitude and frequency of excitation of the dynamic disturbance, there are clearly two regions of stability as in a classic stability problem defined by two potential wells. The obtained time response, phase-portrait, Poincaré sections and …
