The Eurocode 8 (EC8) static torsional loading provisions have been evaluated analytically by the writers, using various simplified but representative plan-eccentric (asymmetric) structural models. Results summarised in this paper demonstrate that certain inadequacies exist in the current code provisions, with regard to the protection given to edge elements of systems subjected to both serviceability and ultimate limit state loadings. In the context of these observations, the paper describes the formation, aims and objectives of the new European Working Group (WG) on Seismic Response of Irregular and Complex Structures.
