puring the preceding 10 days, the cat had been lehargič and would only eat if hand fed. A week be-fre admission the cat was examined by the re-ferring veterinarian when the owner noticed a protruding third eyelid. At that time, physical ex-amination revealed mucopurulent discharge from the right nostril and resistance to opening of the mouth. The right third eyelid was prominent and the right eye lacked direct and consensual pupillary light reflexes (eus). A menacing gesture could not elicit a response from this eye. Using direct ophthalmoscopy, the referring veterinarian had difficulty focusing on the right optic disk. Chloram-phenicol-polymyxin-hydrocortisone-acetate oph-thalmic ointment" was administered topically to the right eye and a 5-day course of amoxicillin (50 mgq 8 h) was begun.
