Description
Honeybees are being employed on a commercial scale to increase the production of fruit, vegetable and seed crops. Latif, Qayyum and Haq (1956) found that in West Pakistan bees increased the yield of Egyptian clover up to 64%. In Pakistan the yields per acre are very low, and the total production of several crops is insufficient to meet the national requirement. For instance, according to Turner (1949), West Pakistan needs some 245 000 tons more of edible oils and fats, in addition to industrial requirements. The two most important oil seed crops, which occupy about 92% of the acreage under oil seeds in Pakistan, are toria (Brassica campestris var. toria) and sarson (Brassica campestris var. dichotoma). It is therefore necessary to find methods of increasing the production of these crops. They are self-sterile, and depend mostly on insects for pollination.
