I n N ovember 2 0 0 9, S heffield H allam U niversity (SHU) wascontractedby DCSF (now D f E) to conductamappingexerci seof P ersonal, S ocial, H ealthand E conomic (PSHE) educationin primaryandsecondarysc hoolsin E ngland. T hisresultedfromarecom mendationinthe M acdonald R eviewoftheproposaltom ake PSHE educationstatutory, whichidentifiedthe needforresearchtoesta blishandreportonthepr evalentmodelsofdelive ryfor PSHE educationandtheireffe ctivenessinimprovingo utcomesforchildrenand youngpeople (M acdonald, 2 0 0 9: 8). T hiswasatatimeofheight enedpolicyinterestin PSHE education: in O ctober 2 0 0 8, then S chools M inister J im K nighthadannouncedthat PSHE educationwould becomecompulsory (for K ey S tages 1 4).
T herehavebeenmanydevel opmentsin PSHE educationovertheyears, representedinits changingnamefrom PSE to PSHE (throughtheadditionofh ealth), andinmorerecentyears to PSHE education (withtheexpansiontoinc ludeeconomicwellbeing). I naddition, PSHE educationconnectsclos elywith S ocialand E motional A spectsof L earning (SEAL) and C it izenshipteaching. H owever, theelementsthatthetwo strandsof PSHE educationare generallyunderstoodto incorporate, andthatwereincludedin thesurveys, arerepresented in T able 1. 1.
