Description
As correctly observed by Delson et al.(2021), Theropithecus atlanticus (Thomas, 1884) from Aïn Jourdel in Algeria was the first fossil representative of the genus ever described. This species was first described, in Cynocephalus (a name applied to baboons at that time), in a short monograph that is among the foundational works of North-African Plio-Pleistocene stratigraphy and mammalian paleontology.
